What is the difference between Arabica and Robusta coffee beans?
The biggest difference between Arabica and Robusta is flavor. Arabica is aromatic and has soft and sweet flavors. Robusta, on the other hand, is a strong and powerful bean and is therefore more bitter. Coffee beans with 100% Robusta are not common because this will make the coffee very bitter. That is why you often see Robusta in a blend. The more Robusta beans there are in the blend, the more kick and bitterness there will be in the coffee.
The caffeine content of both beans also differs quite a bit. Caffeine is actually a defense system of the plant to protect itself against diseases and parasites. Robusta grows at lower altitudes and therefore comes into contact with more parasites, resulting in Robusta having more caffeine than Arabica. Arabica is found at an average altitude of no less than 1500 meters or higher. This reduces the chance of diseases and parasites, and therefore Arabica needs less caffeine.
Which coffee beans should I have?
Above, the flavor of both beans is described. If you prefer bitter, it is important that there is some Robusta in the blend. The more Robusta, the more bitter the coffee. If you do not like bitter at all, then the Arabica bean is the bean for you and there should be as little Robusta in the blend as possible.
